Gevorg Safaryan appeales against verdict

Gevorg Safaryan, an activist of the "Constituent Parliament", sentenced on the charge of abusing a policeman, has filed a complaint to the Criminal Court of Appeal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 16, in Yerevan, the court found Gevorg Safaryan guilty of the fact that he hit a man in Freedom Square in Yerevan at night of January 1, 2016. Gevorg Safaryan was sentenced to two years of imprisonment.

According to the website of the Judicial Department “DataLex”, Gevorg Safaryan demands to cancel the decision of the first instance court and to acquit him completely.

Let us remind you that the trial in the case against Gevorg Safaryan was accompanied by protests of the public. According to Gevorg Safaryan himself, he was only trying to stop the policemen who were beating activists. In his final speech at the trial, the activist stated that the public prosecutor applied double standards when he treated as evidence the video materials submitted by the prosecutors and refused to consider the materials submitted by the defence. Avetik Ishkhanyan, Chairman of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, has called the verdict of guilty pronounced against Gevorg Safaryan as punishment for criticizing the authorities.
