Gevorg Safaryan sentenced to two years in prison

The court has found Gevorg Safaryan, an Armenian activist and a member of the "Constituent Parliament", guilty of using violence against a power official, and sentenced him to two years in jail.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that according to investigators Gevorg Safaryan hit a policeman during the confrontation of members of the "Constituent Parliament" with power agents at night on January 1, 2016, in Freedom Square in Yerevan. The defendant insisted that he only tried to stop the policemen, who were beating up activists.

Today, the court in Yerevan has convicted Safaryan, despite the fact that the activist refused to plead guilty, and supporters of the opposition at their actions declared him a political prisoner. Safaryan has received two years of imprisonment. This is half a year less than demanded by the state prosecutor, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
