Hague Court accepts lawsuit against Bidzina Ivanishvili

The opposition Georgian Labour Party has demanded to bring the former Georgian Prime Minister to criminal liability for involvement in illegal arms sales to Angola.

According to the lawsuit filed to the International Criminal Court in Hague, members of the Labour Party demand to bring the former Prime Minister of Georgia to criminal liability for financing the supply of weapons to Angola at the expense of the assets of the "Russian Credit" Bank, owned by Bidzina Ivanishvili before May 2012.

According to the information, specified in the lawsuit, in 1993-1998, Bidzina Ivanishvili provided delivery of Russian-made weapons for the amount of about 790 million US dollars from France to Angola, where the civil war took place in that period of time and the import of weapons was banned.

The theme of the "Angolagate" scandal rose during the elections to the Georgian Parliament in 2012; however, it did not have any influence on the course of the campaign. This year, the name of Bidzina Ivanishvili has been mentioned in connection with the "Panama archive" case. Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the "Georgian Dream" Party, was mentioned among those whose assets have been disclosed by the International Consortium for Investigative Journalism (ICIJ).
