At least eight armed incidents occur in area of Derbent since early 2016

According to the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot", the armed clash taking place on October 16 in Derbent during the counterterrorist operation (CTO) has become at least the eighth armed incident in the area during the year of 2016. In total, eight armed clashes killed 16 and wounded other 41 people.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the course of operational and search activities, law enforcers cordoned off a group of militants who refused to lay down arms and opened fire on the law enforcers. According to the preliminary information, two militants were killed.

Earlier this year, the CTO legal regime has already been introduced within the territory of the Derbent District. On March 1, law enforcers were engaged in searching for militants. The CTO legal regime was lifted on September 15.

Since the beginning of 2016, armed incidents repeatedly occurred in the area.

On January 19, a police squad was shelled near the village of Mamedkala in the Derbent District. One policeman was wounded.

On February 15, an explosion took place at the Djemikent checkpoint of the road police (known as GIBDD) in the Derbent District. As a result, four persons, including a suicide bomber, were killed, and other 18 were wounded.

On May 9, in Derbent, criminals killed in his own house 82-year-old Gadjiakhmed Kaziakhmedov, the father of Felix Kaziakhmedov, the former Mayor of Derbent, Lieutenant Colonel Marat Kaziakhmedov, an official of the Prosecutor's Office of Dagestan, and Seifudin Kaziakhmedov, the chief of the Department for investigation of particularly important cases at the Investigating Department for Dagestan of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) at the Russian Prosecutor's Office, who was killed in 2009.

On May 14, in Derbent, law enforcers conducted a special operation against the people suspected of the murder of Gadjiakhmed Kaziakhmedov. It was also reported about the deaths of four suspected militants, the chief of the criminal investigation department, and an OMON (riot police) fighter.

On May 28, a shootout took place in the area between villages of Rukel and Mitagi-Kazmalyar in the Derbent District. As a result, law enforcers killed Abutdin Khanmagomedov, the suspected leader of the militant grouping, who swore allegiance the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia, and his accomplice Radjab Ismailov.

On June 17, near the village of Gedjukh in the Derbent District, law enforcers discovered suspected members of the armed underground. As a result, according to the preliminary information, Gasan Abdullaev, the leader of the "Southern" grouping of militants, and two OMON fighters were killed.

On July 12, in Derbent, policemen were shelled by unidentified people while trying to stop their car for a check. Two policemen were wounded.
