Residents of Abkhazia celebrate anniversary of recognition of independence

Sports competitions, screening the film "Time of Happy Discoveries" and the festival "Days of Russia's Spiritual Culture" were held in Sukhumi on the eighth anniversary of recognition of the independence of Abkhazia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 8, 2008, warfare broke out between Georgia and South Ossetia. Active military operations lasted for five days. After that, Russia announced the end of the operation to force Georgia to peace; and on August 26, 2008, recognized independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgia treats both republics as its occupied territories.

On August 26, in Sukhumi, celebrations of the independence of anniversary began with a performance by the break-dance group "Apsny-CREW". Then, residents of the republic took part in the sports festival.

The celebration ended with screening the film "Time of Happy Discoveries", based on the works by Fazil Iskander, the "Sputnik-Abkhazia" writes.

Besides, on August 26, the Abkhaz State Drama Theatre hosted, within the celebrations of the Independence Day, a gala-concert of the festival "Days of Russia's Spiritual Culture", the "Apsnypress" reports.
