Suspected IS recruiter detained in Astrakhan

A resident of Astrakhan tried to persuade his two friends to go to fight for the "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia by court. This is reported by the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

According to investigators, the 35-year-old man selected people potentially prone because of their religious beliefs to leaving for Syria to take part in the combat actions as members of the IS.

"In December 2015, the suspect met two men, and he tried to persuade them to take part in the combat actions against the government forces in the territory of Syria," reports the press service of the ICRF's Investigating Department for the Astrakhan Region.

A criminal case is instituted on aiding and abetting in terrorist activities, reported the website of the ICRF's Investigating Department. The defendant faces 5-10 years of imprisonment.
