In Azerbaijan, earthquake damages old buildings

As a result of the earthquake in the Imishli District of Azerbaijan, old buildings got cracks. This was reported by the administration of the Imishli District. Meanwhile, till present, no information has been reported about the destruction. Seismologists do not expect new strong aftershocks.

This morning, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has reported the aftershock of magnitude 5.1 which occurred at 8:46 a.m. local time in the vicinity of the Azerbaijani town of Imishli. At 8:49 a.m. local time, the second earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was registered in the vicinity of Imishli.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed at the executive administration of the Imishli District of Azerbaijan that according to the preliminary information, the earthquake resulted in cracks in the walls of old buildings.

Officers of the National Seismological Service Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan have informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that because of the fact that the epicentre of the earthquake rooted deep 22 km under the earth shell aftershocks of magnitude 5 were felt on the surface.

"In case if the earthquake epicentre located at a depth of 6-7 km, then the aftershocks could reach magnitude 7 points, and then the consequences of the earthquake would have been devastating," reports an official of the EMSC.
