HRC head warns Kadyrov against pressures on judges

Should Magomed Karataev, the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Chechnya, resign as demanded by Ramzan Kadyrov, the actions of the acting head of Chechnya could be regarded as pressure, said Mikhail Fedotov, the head of the Human Rights Council (HRC) under the President of Russia. Karataev himself claims that Kadyrov had been misled.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 5 Ramzan Kadyrov demanded from Magomed Karataev and three other judges to resign voluntarily. According to Kadyrov, he was informed about numerous violations in considering criminal and civil cases.

Kadyrov should be careful to the utmost in his words against the judges, Mr Fedotov said on air of the "Echo Moskvy" Radio. According to his story, if after Kadyrov's statements the judges will really have to resign, it could be regarded as the result of direct Kadyrov’s pressure.

Magomed Karataev, a native of the Gudermes District of Chechnya, was appointed the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Chechnya on May 23, 2013, for a term of six years. Earlier, he worked as Chairman of the Khasavyurt District Court of Dagestan.
