Court sentences Parpulov to 12 years in colony

Today, the Krasnodar Territorial Court found Pyotr Parpulov, a Sochi pensioner, guilty of high treason. His defence announced its intention to appeal against the verdict.

Pyotr Parpulov was accused of high treason (Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code) and faced a threat of up to 20 years in prison. According to the defence, Parpulov claims his innocence.

"With account of the opinion of the state prosecutor, the court found Parpulov guilty under Article 275 the Russian Criminal Code (high treason) and sentenced him to 12 years in a high security colony. The sentencing took place behind closed doors," the "Interfax" quoted the advocate of Pyotr Parpulov Oleg Eliseev as saying.

According to the advocate, the defence continues insisting on Parpulov's innocence and intends to appeal against the verdict. "Although the sentence was announced now, we are not still aware with its full text. As soon as we get it, we'll challenge it," the RIA "Novosti" quotes Oleg Eliseev as saying.
