Project to restore Tyrnyauz mining and processing plant needs 14.5 billion roubles

The Tyrnyauz tungsten-molybdenum mining and processing plant is planned to be reconstructed under the advanced technologies. According to the preliminary estimates, the planned reconstruction requires 14.5 billion roubles of investment.

In the early 2000s, the Tyrnyauz mining and processing plant actually suspended its activities. The authorities of Kabardino-Balkaria made attempts to revive the plant. In December 2011, it was decided to create Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) "Kabardino-Balkarian Tungsten-Molybdenum Company" to implement the project for revival of the Tyrnyauz mining and processing plant.

On September 21, the authorities signed a state contract for inventory of deposits of tungsten-molybdenum ore of the Tyrnyauz field. The inventory works are expected to take place in two phases and be completed by March 31, 2016.

According to geologists, the Tyrnyauz deposit contains more than 382 million tons of tungsten and molybdenum. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Makhmut Eneev, Chief Specialist for Public Relations of the administration of the Elbrus District.

Boris Blaev, who held the post of the Director of the Tyrnyauz tungsten-molybdenum mining plant in 1981-1993, has reported that the uniqueness of the Tyrnyauz deposit is in the fact that it is the most high-altitude deposit in the world, where the height difference between the lower and upper ore occurrences ranges from 1850 meters up to 3250 meters above sea level.

At present, the Tyrnyauz tungsten-molybdenum mining plant is in the process of bankruptcy.

The collapse of the Tyrnyauz mining and processing plant, which resulted in the rise in unemployment among young people, became one of the causes for the activation of the armed underground in the area. In October 2010, in one of the abandoned mines of the Tyrnyauz plant, fighters of the special units of the FSB and the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) carried out a large-scale special operation against suspected militants.
