Employees of Georgian Ombudsman report prisoners are beaten in Gldani Prison
In the course of their regular monitoring visit to Gldani Prison No. 8, located in Tbilisi, employees of the office of the Ombudsman (People's Defender) of Georgia found two beaten prisoners. The Ministry of Corrections knows nothing about the incident.
According to the above employees, the incident occurred on November 12: they heard cries during their visit to the prison, and after their tough insistence, they were allowed to see the inmates who were in the shower cell.
"Both men were down on the floor in wet clothes. The inmate M. U. had his hands and feet tied with special chains. Bodies of both men had signs of violence: M. U. had a bleeding laceration wound on his forehead and other multiple injuries, while the other inmate – M. P. – had his right eye bleeding," says the statement issued by the Ombudsman's office.
Ucha Nanuashvili, the Ombudsman, has called the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) to start immediate investigation "into the possible ill-treatment of prisoners." He insists on carrying out a forensic examination to define the extent of injuries on prisoners' bodies, the "News-Georgia" reports.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in August in Georgia a criminal case was opened under the article of "incitement to suicide" in connection with the death in Correctional Facility No. 6, located in Rustavi of the 24-year-old Djido Pitskheliani. His relatives would not believe in the suicide version.
