Georgian experts rule out President's impeachment

The ruling coalition "Georgian Dream" will not be able to initiate impeachment of President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, who is now in confrontation with the Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the experts questioned by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent believe. In their opinion, no fundamental changes in the work of the coalition should be expected, even in spite of the increased number of the MPs from the "Georgian Dream".

As reported, on November 14 Margvelashvili urged the MPs to control the government, in order "to ensure a stable course of integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures." Meanwhile, the former Georgian Premier Bidzina Ivanishvili accused Margvelashvili of "perceiving the Govt as a competitor."

Nika Chitadze, a political scientist and Professor at the International Black Sea University, has noted today that the Parliament "no legal grounds to initiate the impeachment."

According to the Constitution of Georgia, in order to impeach the President, they need a decision of the Supreme Court that the President has breached the criminal law, or a decision of the Constitutional Court that the President breached the Constitution.

According to Kakha Gogolashvili, Director of the Centre for European Studies, despite the increase number of MPs in the "Georgian Dream" coalition, Georgia will not roll up the European integration initiatives.

In his opinion, "the political order of the population is focused on convergence with the West" and "the government will not be able to oppose the views of the majority."
