Roundtable in Pyatigorsk discusses growing conflicts among students of Dagestan and Stavropol Territory

The participants of the interregional round table "Preventing Conflicts among Students of Dagestan and Stavropol Territory: New Approaches", held on April 16 in Pyatigorsk, discussed ways to prevent interethnic conflicts and issues of combating extremism among young people, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

According to Absalitdin Mirzaev, the executive director of the non-commercial partnership "Tolerance", one of the growth factors of extremist and radical moods is the inter-generation conflict. "Traditional institutes have been exhausted; earlier interrelations are being transformed. All these issues are very important in terms of preventing extremism," said Mirzaev.

Denis Sokolov, Director General of the Caucasian Centre of Project Solutions, believes it wrong to reduce the problem of radicalism to a conflict of generations. In his opinion, reasons of the conflict should be sought by studying the issues of struggle for influence and resources.

Denis Sokolov also believes that a major problem is in the uncertainty of many notions used by experts on the Caucasus. "These abstract notions are used to compile specific lists of unreliable persons, with whom law enforcers then work quite particularly. As a result, the situation becomes increasingly tense," he said.
