Bortnikov: FSB has prevented, jointly with other countries' special services, terror acts in Sochi

The Federal Security Bureau (FSB) of the Russian Federation acting jointly with its colleagues from other countries, including Georgia, has stopped the preparations of terror acts at Olympic facilities in Sochi, said the FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov.

He said, when addressing the sitting in Sochi of heads of special services, security agencies and law enforcement bodies of foreign countries – FSB's partners, that this was made possible thanks to converted efforts of several countries.

"An example is the concrete joint work of the FSB with its colleagues from the USA, Austria, France, Germany and Georgia in relation to a group of persons, who had intended to commit terror acts at Olympic facilities in Sochi," the RIA "Novosti" quotes Bortnikov as saying.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in July 2013, Doku (Dokku) Umarov, the leader of the "Imarat Kavkaz", called on the armed underground to use all possible methods to disrupt the Olympic Games in Sochi. Experts from the International Crisis Group said in their report "The Olympics and Tourism in the Caucasus: Development Impulse or Conflict Deepening?" that the Winter Games would be held under the elevated terrorist threat. On January 7, Sochi was put under enhanced security regime.
