In Azerbaijan, oppositionists applaud government's position on situation in Ukraine

The Azerbaijani opposition appreciates the official Baku's position to support the UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine's territorial integrity. This was stated by Ali Kerimli, the leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), who on March 29 spoke at the session of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF).

However, in his opinion, "it is not enough for Azerbaijan to win the sympathy of the international community and achieve the same unequivocal international condemnation of the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territories," like it takes place "in connection with the Russian annexation of Crimea."

"If Azerbaijan wants to take its rightful place in the international democratic community, it should rapidly undertake democratic reforms, join the WTO, sign an association agreement with the EU, deepen partnership with NATO and thus secure a reliable security umbrella. However, we do not see such a tendency. On the contrary, like earlier, the Azerbaijan's government seeks to exploit the situation with increasing geopolitical importance of Azerbaijan to the West to strengthen its regime and intensify repressions against its political opponents," Ali Kerimli believes.
