Armenia holds action in defence of ecologist

Today in Yerevan, a number of environmental organizations and activists held am action in support of the ecologist Egiya Nersisyan, who is sued by a mining company.

The "Dino Gold Mining" Company went to court and accused Nersisyan of defamation and slander. The reason for the suit was the speech delivered by Nersisyan at the meeting with members of the Armenian Diaspora in the USA on December 14, 2012. The company demands to refute the statement: "...You know how foreigners treat Armenia: for example, the Canadian 'Gold Company' in Kapan makes use of electric shock to the workers, so that they don't sleep for 24 hours and could work all the time."

Activists held their protest in front of the court of general jurisdiction of the administrative districts Kanaker-Zeitun, where the first session on the case was to take place; however, it failed for absence of the representative of the "Dino Gold Mining" Company.

Nersisyan refuses to plead guilty and continues accusing the company of wrongdoing. At the today's action, the activist said he would continue his struggle.
