SC of Kabardino-Balkaria cancels compensations to 60 Chernobyl liquidators

The Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) has cancelled compensations of moral harm to the last 60 remaining members of the group of former liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Earlier, they were paid their compensations under the rulings of the Nalchik City and Terek District Courts.

According to the members of the "Chernobyl Union", in early 2011 the liquidators were addressed by Lera Alkhasova, a resident of the KBR, who offered to go to court for compensation of the moral harm, caused to them in the course of their engagement in liquidating the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP in 1986. Now, the liquidators assert that the woman took away half of the money as payment for her help. The above first-instance courts had ruled to collect over 670 million roubles in favour of 484 claimants. However, the SC of the KBR has cancelled the rulings. In October 2012, court marshals began collecting the earlier paid compensations back.

"I have a feeling that the decision of the SC was known in advance; we were just formally asked," Victor Volotskiy, one of the liquidators told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, under the documents he received 1.5 million roubles, but in fact – 750,000 roubles. "I got the money a year ago; and I didn't put it on the shelf for admiration, but spent it. I'm a category II invalid; and I spent most of the money for treatment," Victor said, adding that he has no idea how to return the money.
