Nartkala

Centre of Urvan rayon (sector) of Kabardino-Balkariya, 25 km north-east of Nalchik. Located near northern foothills of the Greater Caucasus. Railway station (Dokshukino) on the branch starting from the station of Kotlyarevskaya in the Prokhladnaya - Beslan - Grozny line. Population (1992 est.) 28.8 thousand.

Founded as a railway station when driving the railway. In the 1930s, the settlement of Dokshukino specialised in processing of local agricultural production. Town since 1955. Given the name of Nartkala in 1967.

By the beginning of the 1990s, the town had a chemical plant; the Teleavtomatizatsya factory, a tyre repair shop, a cannery (built in the 1930s), etc.; production of building materials. Agricultural centre (crops of grain, gardening, meat-and-dairy cattle breeding).
