Armed confrontation in Northern Caucasus: 1710 victims in 2010

No less than 1710 people became victims of smouldering armed confrontation in Northern Caucasus in 2010. 754 people were killed and 956 more got wounded as a result of an armed conflict between enforcement agencies and armed underground. These are the results of "Caucasian Knot's" calculation based upon its own data and information from open sources.

349 persons declared members of armed underground, 225 employees of law enforcement bodies and 180 peaceful residents are among those murdered.

74 % out of the total number of victims of armed confrontation between enforcement agencies and extremist underground fall on Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan. The collision in these regions has victimized all in all no less than 639 lives and 622 persons were wounded which makes in total 1261 victims.

The absolute top ranking from the point of view of the number of victims among these regions of Northern Caucasus during the past year belongs to Dagestan where the total number of victims of the conflict came to 685 people, 378 of them were killed and 307 wounded.

The second place is occupied by Ingushetia with its 326 victims including 134 killed and 192 wounded; the third goes Chechnya numbering 250 victims of an armed conflict between enforcement agencies and the underground, 127 killed and 123 wounded among them.

Next in descending order follow North Osetia (195 victims: 24 killed and 171 wounded), Kabardino-Balkaria (161 victims: 79 killed and 82 wounded), Stavropol region (89 victims: 10 killed and 79 wounded), Karachaevo-Cherkesia (with 4 victims: two killed and two wounded).

Explosions and acts of terror

No less than 238 explosions and acts of terror took place in Northern Caucasus, among them 112 in Dagestan, 41 in Kabardino-Balkaria, 40 in Ingushetia, 37 in Chechnya, 5 in South Osetia and 3 fall on Stavropol region.

In particular, 22 acts of terror were committed with the participation of suicide bombers, twelve of them happened in Chechnya, five in Dagestan, two in Ingushetia, the same number in North Osetia and one in Kabardino-Balkaria.

According to law enforcement bodies, 107 more explosions were prevented in Northern Caucasus in 2010: 42 in Dagestan, 28 in Ingushetia, 26 in Kabardino-Balkaria, 10 in Chechnya and one in Stavropol region.

Besides, two acts of terror directly connected with the situation in Northern Caucasus were committed in Moscow in 2010, in "Lubianka" and "Park Cultury" metro stations on March, 29, by two women suicide bombers. According to law enforcement bodies, both terrorists were natives of Dagestan.

In total, according to the calculation of "Caucasian Knot", explosions and acts of terror in Northern Caucasus and Moscow took away no less than 178 lives and 895 people got wounding of different extent of gravity.

Losses among members of the top brass and the underground

The number of armed confrontations between the strongmen and participants of the underground in Northern Caucasus in 2010 came to 368. 148 of them took place in Dagestan, 103 in Ingushetia, 62 in Chechnya, 49 in Kabardino-Balkaria, 3 in Karachaevo-Cherkesia, 2 in North Osetia and one in Stavropol district.

Within the framework of struggle against paramilitary groups (PMG) there were 34 announcements of local regime of a counter-terror operation (CTO). In particular, the regime of CTO was established 22 times in Dagestan, seven times in Ingushetia, three times in Chechnya and twice in Kabardino-Balkaria.

According to law enforcement bodies, the losses of armed underground in Northern Caucasus in 2010 came to 349 people who died as a result of self-blasting and actions of the strongmen aimed at struggle against the underground. 176 cases out of these fall on Dagestan, 80 on Chechnya, 63 on Ingushetia, 25 on Kabardino-Balkaria, two on both Stavropol region and North Osetia and one on Karachaevo-Cherkesia.

Besides, according to the data of enforcement agencies, 354 members of PMG were detained, 166 of them in Chechnya, 41 in Dagestan, 28 in Ingushetia, 7 both in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachaevo-Cherkesia, 4 in Stavropol district and one in North Osetia.

In total, 225 employees of law enforcement bodies in Northern Caucasus were killed as a result of firing, explosions and armed confrontations, among them 124 persons in Dagestan, 44 in Chechnya, 31 in Ingushetia, 23 in Kabardino-Balkaria, two in North Osetia and one in Karachaevo-Cherkesia.

Besides, 467 strongmen were wounded, 200 of them in Dagestan, 133 in Ingushetia, 93 in Chechnya, 35 in North Osetia and one in Karachaevo-Cherkesia.

Victims among peaceful population

Confrontation between the strongmen and the underground directly impacts peaceful residents of North Caucasian regions which is manifested by statistics of victims among civil persons.

No less than 180 peaceful residents perished in Northern Caucasus in 2010 as a result of acts of terror, explosions and firing: 78 of them in Dagestan, 40 in Ingushetia, 31 in Kabardino-Balkaria, 20 in North Osetia, three both in Chechnya and Stavropol region.

No less than 489 civil persons got wounded, among them 167 in North Osetia, 107 in Dagestan, 79 in Stavropol region, 59 in Ingushetia, 47 in Kabardino-Balkaria and 30 in Chechnya.

Kidnapping, disappearances and illegal detentions of citizens went on in the regions of Northern Caucasus throughout the whole 2010. In total, no less than 50 cases of this kind have been registered, 18 of them in Dagestan and Ingushetia, 6 both in Chechnya and Kabardino-Balkaria, two more residents of Ingushetia, according to their relatives, were kidnapped in Stavropol district.

The statistics cited in this article shows that 2010 did not become a year of peace for Northern Caucasus. There are no longer large-scale wars in the region but people go on perishing in local "non-wars". The past year took away no less than 754 lives. Family and friends of those who died in 2010 as a result of these local "non-wars" leaving indelible imprints in their lives should be listed among the victims, too.
