Tkhagapsoev: candidates for presidency in Kabardino-Balkariya were no rivals

On August 23, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev brought his nominee Arsen Kanokov to consideration of the parliament of Kabardino-Balkaria for approval as president. Other candidates were Alexander Merkulov, local Prime Minister, and Anuar Chechenov, local Speaker. However, experts note that that Medvedev's decision was anticipated and predictable, and there was no rivalry among the candidates.

In the opinion of Professor Hadjismel Tkhagapsoev, an expert on regional matters, all the three candidates are co-thinkers and represent one team. "I see purely partisan approach in promotion these particular nominees," he told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Timur Tenov, head of the public organization "Civil Union", believes that candidatures of Merkulov and Chechenov were "purely technical." "This procedure can be viewed as appointment of president for the lack of any other alternative," Mr Tenov is sure.

"This attitude of the federal centre is only aggravating the situation. The opposition should also have a chance to present its programme," he added to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

In his interview to one of local newspapers Anuar Chechenov noted that he had acted within the procedure established by the Russian legislation in force. "I agree with Arsen Kanokov's policy. I'm his supporter and associate," he said.

Under the Speaker's forecast, the voting in the parliament will take place right in early September, the "Club of Regions" writes.
