Conference "Institution of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Subjects of Russia's South"

The international conference "Institution of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Subjects of Russia's South: Problems of Making, Experience of Interaction with Public Authorities, and Prospects of Development" was held in Astrakhan on October 16-17. It was arranged by the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Astrakhan region, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Saint Petersburg Humanitarian and Political Science Center "Strategia" (Strategy). All the six commissioners for human rights in the South Federal District - from the Republics of Ingushetia and Kalmikia, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, and Astrakhan and Volgograd regions took part in the conference. Public agents of these subjects of Russia's South were also participants in it.

The significant factor for the intensification of constructive cooperation between the ombudsman institution and other power structures was that E. A. Pamfilova, chairwoman of the Russian President's Commission on Human Rights, S. I. Popov, chief staff advisor of the Russian President's Plenipotentiary in the South Federal District, and V. V. Ushakov, deputy head of the department of the Russian General Prosecutor's Office in the South Federal District, participated in the conference too.

This conference became an important stage on the way leading to the consolidation of the ombudsman institution in the South of Russia and to the intensification of constructive cooperation of this new institution with the other power structures.
